It has become fashionable to deride Christianity and those who take an interest in the Bible. I think, no matter who you are, you will find benefit in reading the Bible. I am not saying that you have to believe it all as literally true; certain parts of the Bible were even recognized by ancient Jews as to be interpreted allegorically. I’m not even saying that you should go to church or anything like that. I think that people would benefit from a greater understanding of the book that so much of our culture is based on. Wouldn’t you like to understand the references made by some of the greatest artists of all time, like Shakespeare?
Bible Gateway is a good resource for anyone who wants to read the Bible. It has really convenient and helpful annotation features, many translations to choose from, and a good layout. STEP, on the other hand, is a resource geared more towards those who are familiar with liturgical languages, such as Hebrew and Greek. STEP is even useful for those who cannot read these languages. To find a more in-depth translation of a word, one only has to mouse over it. There is also the option to find all of the uses of that word in the Bible.
At this time, I have no suggestions on English translations. Depending on your goal, be it an easier, more enjoyable reading experience or a scholarly, literal study of the Bible, I suggest you do a little research yourself to find a translation that works best for you. Remember, there is a lot more out there than just the King James Version.
